A few weeks ago i worked with Australian comedian Tim Minchin for E.S. Magazine.
Minchin's debut was at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2005, and since then then he has been performing his stand-up show of wit,singing and satire to increasingly large audiences. A recent show at the Royal Albert Hall included a full symphony orchestra.He has written the songs for the RSC's version of Roald Dahl's Matilda at the Cambridge Theatre [matildathemusical.com ] . I had the pleasure of working with Serena Linley yesterday, in her very beautiful shop in Walton Street .Serena has created a beautiful range of soaps,candles , creams and fragrances inspired by the Lavender grown in Provence. All the products have been created and tested with a chemist and you can have a bespoke soap made according to the PH of your skin and the hardness of your water. At the moment i am working my way through trying the gorgeous range of room fragrances such as 'Pine needles and Eucalyptus' , 'Almond and Vanilla' , 'Narcissus and Frangipani' and many more. I am also testing the lavender scented body lotion which is so light it is immediately absorbed in to the skin and smells amazing, and the Essential Day Care lotion with Iris Flower Extract for my skin type....I will report back on this soon!

Today sees our Chiffon summer dress story "A Bold Statement" shot in Ibiza out in Stylist Magazine. We spent a day in the most incredible crumbling location, an abandoned amphitheatre, filled with the most amazing graffitti.

The kaleidoscopic colours of the dresses was the perfect opportunity to make very strong rainbow eyes make-up and big afro curled hair !

Summer Outdoor Sport Beauty Essentials

Inspired by my "Race for Life" for cancer run on 03/07/11 in Blackheath i wanted to share my basic "Beauty" essentials to help get through a 10k run [or any outdoor summer sports.]

WATER -Before,during and after. Sounds obvious, but just a small amount of dehydration will result in a drop in energy levels.
SUNSCREEN- I used Clinique body spray in SPF 25 which is incredibly effective and easy to apply.Also Clinique Targeted Protection stick in SPF 35 which is perfect for lips, shoulders and other burn-prone areas.
FOOTPROTECTION-Obviously you will be wearing well cushioned trainers [I went Runners Need in Canary Wharf where they analyse your gait in order to help find the most suitable trainers] But on the day it is a must to protect your feet from painful blisters. Simply coat your feet in a thick greasy cream inside your socks. I used Keihls Imperial Body Balm but you could use good old Vaseline.
SUNGLASSES- Protecting your eyes from sun and dust and pollution is a must! Get a big pair of bug eyes that fit securely!
CLEANSING WIPES- I took Body Shop Gentle Wipes with Vitamin E
MAKE-UP . Ok well all you need is some gorgeous Nail Varnish! Any other make-up on your face will simply block pores and end up everywhere! So i wore Barry M Nail Paint in Shocking Pink 272.

Today i went to the launch of Benefit's new mascara at 5 Cavendish Square.It's called "They're Real" and it will be available in August . If you want natural lashes forget it, these lashes are designed to give dramatic length and volume,base to tip curl, visible lift and long-wearing results. In fact they will look like false lashes except "They're Real !"

Back in May we flew to Ibiza to shoot summer fashion stories for Stylist magazine. The first is a white minimal shoot called "Immaculate Collection" shot in an incredible modern location house overlooking the sea .[Look out for my behind the scenes snapshots coming up soon.]
The idea of the hair and make-up was that it should be totally clean and minimal with a white irregular stripe on the eyes .I used Make-up by Chanel and Hair products by Frederic Fekkai [Look out for a tutorial on creating this look soon.]

Tonight was the launch party at Liberty of London in Regent Street. The book is about changing your look from top to toe , customizing your whole wardrobe with creative ideas . Mary Jane shows you how to be inventive without having to spend lots of money. They are modelling pieces donated by designers for Auction to raise money for the Mending Broken Hearts appeal. Here is a preview of some of the pictures.

Allergy and redness skincare solutions.

Ok , Just a quick blog post to share some information i hope is helpful.
Anyone following me on twitter will know that i have been suffering a nightmare allergy reaction to a product i used last week .The reaction being rather like waking up to a hot 'sunburnt' face with skin like sandpaper, rather than a rash . Anyone that knows me, will know that i am obsessive about maintaining perfect skin and that i am constantly trying out new products i am sent . I have also never had a reaction to a skin product before so have been working hard to find solutions to calm it down , and then cover it up.

I would not be writing this if what i tried had not worked wonders. I am totally open to natural and high tech skincare , but i decided to try Bio Active Aloe Vera gel for its soothing moisturizing properties and high strength Manuka honey with its healing antibacterial properties and cucumber! I massaged both in to my skin twice a day and left on as a mask and the results have been amazing..my skin almost back to normal smoothness. I plan to continue using both as masks.

There are many concealing products out there , but the ones i have found most effective to totally cover any redness are :
1. Clinique - Redness Solutions , a foundation with SPF 15.This is very important as the last thing you want on a red irritated skin is sunlight.
2. Benefit "Boi-ing" a very heavy duty but smooth concealer.
3. Teosyal Covering Repair concealer, amazing at correcting skin imperfections and containing arnica to reduce inflammation.
Sorry there are no before and after photos , you will have to take my word for it !

Jelly inspired lip balm Chubby Sticks at Clinique.

To follow on from my last blog post about perfect lipstick application, today i went to the press launch of Clinique 's new Chubby Stick lip balm pencils. There are 8 beautiful colours inspired by the beautiful clear colour of jelly !They are incredibly quick and easy to apply and there are shades for every season.
The beautiful jelly sculpture was created by jellymongers Bompas and Parr who create spectacular architectural food experiences [2nd image]. Today we sampled little jellies with flavours of the lip pencils.

My tips for perfect lipstick.

Applying lipstick seems to be one of the make-up areas women find most difficult. I am not going to start telling you which colour you should wear if your hair is blonde ,or if your eyes are blue etc, as this becomes incredibly confusing and i believe you should wear what you want ! But i am going to give you a list of tips and rules to help you get the best from your lipsticks and make your choice of colour .

1. You need to start with a smooth base. Lips look awful if they are dry and flaky. Regularly coat with a layer of moisuriser or lipbalm [you can leave it a while] , then using an old toothbrush , brush in circular movements to remove dead skin. The action will also increase circulation and help plump them up.
Also , regular use of a lipbalm containing SPFs as the skin on your lips is thinner than the rest of your face so needs extra protection.
2. Whatever look you are trying to achieve, start by rubbing in a little non greasy lipbalm , not too much or your colour will slide straight off again and bleed at the edges
3. If you want a light colour wash , select your colour then apply with your index finger rubbing in carefully so there no harsh lines.
4.Try mixing your lipstick with a little lip balm for a light tint.
5. For a stronger long lasting look, apply with a lipbrush very carefully drawing around your lips first then filling in. Do this 3 times blotting lightly with a tissue between layers. When you blot simply press the tissue against your lips.
6.To make your lips look fuller apply a dot of lipgloss to the centre of your lips.
7.To prevent bleeding , try outlining lips with a skin toned pencil at the edges first .
8. For extra long lasting colour, try using a lip pencil all over your lips under your lipstick or alone as a matt look in itself.
9. Prevent lipstick on your teeth by pulling your index finger through the centre of your closed lips.
10. Things to avoid!
*Outlining lips outside of your natural lipline, a very dated look, and you risk being left with a strange line once the lipstick has worn off!
*If you just cant master the art of lipstick application, avoid applying with a very sharp edge as you will only emphasise a wonky application !
11. A few "Rules"
* Dark colours will make thin lips look thinner and light colours thicker !
*Matte colour will minimize lips.
*Glossy colour will magnify lips.
*Red lipstick will always draw attention to your face , and if you think you can't wear it, try as a light stain above .

Ok , as ever there are trends in colours , and at the moment i am working a lot with some very strong pure colours and 3 of my favourites are a bright orange by Sisley [Mandarine] , a bright Fuschia by YSL [07] and a bright red by YSL [01] . Which can all be used as a strong statement or a light wash.

Magazine. Gary is fashion director of 125 magazine and searches charity shops ,jumbles sales and markets for fabrics to use . Gary also made the beautiful dress for Livia Firth ,owner of Eco Age, to wear at the Oscars recently [pictured above .] Above you can see some of Gary's other beautiful dresses.

Spring Blusher Inspiration .

Spring is the time for rethinking everything [spring cleaning !] and that includes your make-up !
I am feeling very inspired by all the beautiful spring blossoms , they are out for such a short time , which kind of heightens their intensity.
Blusher is a good place to start to create a fresh new look, and its really very simple:
Create a fresh glowing base , don't try to create a tan as a pale face is perfect for this look.Keep your eyes very simple with a few strokes of mascara, and lips need nothing more than a pinky stain or clear gloss. Brush on a touch of translucent powder then apply one of the beautiful pinky/peachy blushers in a circular motion to the apples of your cheeks.

My favorites for this look are Benefit "Dandelion" a lovely fresh pink and Shu Uemura in "M Pink" or "MPeach " all beautiful freshspring like colours. Don't be scared to make a feature of your beautiful blusher.

Mens Grooming Tips Special

Ok , time for some Grooming tips for the boys...i have spent many man hours moisturising and grooming the faces of many for photoshoots as you can see on this blog , so here's what i have learnt along the way. If its so obvious, why do so many men suffer shave burn ? I am often asked to recommend products , and some of my favorites are by Kiehls.

1.Wash hair first to remove oils and dry skin. Try using a gentle facial scrub such as Kiehls Facial Fuel Energising scrub.
2.The closest shave is a wet shave using a multi bladed and swivel headed razor and shaving cream.Try Keihls Ultimate Brushless shave cream -white Eagle .
3.Lather with a brush soaked in hot water and soften beard first with hot damp towels or a hot shower.Sensitive skin could try massaging a few drops of "Close Shavers " shaving formula in to beard first to help soften hairs.
4. Shave in the same direction of hair growth.
5.Finish by splashing with cold water.
6. WAIT for skin to calm down before using any aftershaves or risk irritating rashes.
7.Apply moisturiser such as Kiehls Ultimate Aftershave balm and moisturizer.

Of course its super fashionable to have plenty of beard .....but many men tell me its only because they think their faces are too sensitive to shave.

Back on a freezing February Saturday a huge team of people and many rails of beautiful dresses gathered at Fulham Palace to shoot this feature on the most beautiful teenagers in Britain for April's Tatler. There were 10 girls , myself and fellow make up artist Linda Johansson worked on 5 girls each , and Hairdressers Choccy and Daniel Dyer worked wonders on the hair.All styling is by Mouchette Bell and it was photographed by Iris Brocsh.

I dug out my old shoot polaroid book today from under a cloud of dust, it rarely sees the light of day any more thanks to digital technology. It hasn't been updated in a long time. We are all loving Hipstamatic on the i phone but nothing beats the real thing . I especially love the lingerie shoot which was shot by Craig Fordham.

Beauty tip: How to get a hollywood smile.

One of the best beauty assets of all is a set of perfect white teeth.I am not about to suggest everyone runs off and gets a set of expensive veneers that will eventually fall off , but here are the rules for perfecting what you have :
Visit your dentist every 6 months to get your teeth cleaned professionally.
Use a toothpaste twice a day containing fluoride , and brush gently[too hard and you risk your gums receding ] for at least 2 minutes -30 seconds isn't long enough to remove plaque. Remember to brush your tongue too.
Change your toothbrush every 2 months or better still invest in an electric toothbrush.
Use dental floss every time you brush teeth and little interdental brushes for gappy teeth.
Use an alcohol free mouthwash after every brushing to remove bacteria, if you have inflamed gums use one containing chlorhexidine [temporarily].
Use whitening toothpastes regularly, home whitening kits tend to contain very low levels of peroxide so any serious whitening by laser needs to be done by a professional.
Reduce stains by rubbing lemon zest , fresh strawberries,charcoal,sage leaves or burnt rosemary.
Massage your gums daily with your index finger to improve blood flow and help prevent receding gums.
A make-up artists tip to quickly age someone for a film is to brown their teeth ....this says a lot.
I am all in favour of moving the teeth you have !I have been using the Clearstep system which involves a series of invisible teeth positioners which slowly move your teeth for a perfect smile and nobody need know you are doing it . And they come on a set of colourful plaster moulds !See photo above.

Time saving beauty tip : Face Mask

None of us has enough time in the day, but get in to the habit of doing your beauty treatments when you are doing your chores. Don't even think about doing the hoovering or cleaning the oven at home without putting on a face mask [or even a hair mask or eye mask.]While this may sound frightfully old school, the new products certainly aren't. I am in the habit of trying all the new products , but these are 3 i am currently using : 1:Shu Uemura Phyto -black lift for anti aging /lifting. 2: Aveda Deep Cleansing Herbal Clay Masque for deep cleansing of pores.3: Sisley Flower Gel Express Gel for hydrating, toning and firming. To maximize benefits, always apply to clean, exfoliated and ideally steamed skin, leave for approx 10 minutes and rinse with warm water.

Looking at winter clothes when its still winter, never fills me with enthusiasm , so i loved Sass and Bide's collection with a palate of fuschia , orange and coral with a mix of textures and fabrics . This is my favorite dress with a black and white Ikat print and feathery skirt and an elegant 20's shape.It may not be very traditionally fall but its beautiful. Look out for my favorite dress every day this week .

Back on the 3rd and 7th February we shot 3 "apparently" rare straight fashion designers for E.S. magazine . As Kinder Aggugini points out ,'I am not the only straight man in the fashion village. There are actually loads of us. You just don't know about us.' Very interesting feature written by Simon Mills discussing the issue of why women's fashion is dominated by gay men. [If , in fact , it still is.]

Three Great Mascaras

Ok ,so inventing a new mascara may not be saving the world....these 3 are pretty great though.
1.Clinique's new "Bottom Lash Mascara" has a smudge resist formula and a tiny brush to make the task easier. Why did no one think of this before ?
2.Dior's "Diorshow 360" mascara with a unique revolving brush rotates upwards to coat upper lashes , and downwards for lower lashes . Simple!
3.Mac's "Wonder Woman Opulash " mascara wins for its fantastic packaging and 3 great colours. "Themyscira"- bright blue,"Army of Amazons"-green,and"Victorious"-purple and black.
I'm using them all at the moment !
